ABOUT US
As a child and young adult I was an athlete, playing baseball, then football and running track. I always knew I would want my children to be involved with sports and this plan did not change when my wife, Karen, and I were blessed with two beautiful daughters, Emily and Sarah, who both have intellectual disabilities. Although we were not familiar with Special Olympics, it seemed this would be a great organization for us to become involved with.
In 2001, and each year since, we have put together a team and raised money for the Annual UPS Plane Pull Challenge. In 2004, when Emily was 10 years old and Sarah 8, we founded the Louisville Flyers Special Olympics Kentucky program. We began with only 6 athletes and have grown to over 40 athletes. We offer 7 sports, from basketball to track. And as my coaches taught me, I teach my athletes to be the best they can be on and off the field, academically, athletically, and socially.
Our first Flyers team was a track and field team which consisted of only six (6) athletes. That team made it to the State Summer Games and won several medals.
In the fall of 2004, the Flyers expanded to include a basketball team and cheerleading squad. The basketball and cheerleading teams competed in the 2004-2005 regional and state competitions, winning their first state championships.
In the spring of 2005, the Flyers grew to twenty-plus athletes and added additional coaches, ten (10) in all. The track team returned to the State Summer Games that year and again brought home several medals. The basketball and cheerleading teams also took their second state titles.
For the next several years, the Flyers continued to grow, reaching as many as forty five athletes. We continued to win many medals, awards and trophies. In 2010, the Flyers Cheerleading squad won their third State Championship and was named Grand Champions. The first Flyers flag football team was also formed in 2010 and named the State runner up. We continued to offer track and field and basketball but have also added bowling, softball and most recently flag football.
The Louisville Flyers have produced some very distinguished athletes. Among them, a 4 x 100 meter relay team that is one of the best in the state. In 2010, Louisville Flyer athlete Timothy Kornrumpf became the first Flyers athlete to participate in the Special Olympic USA Games in Lincoln, Nebraska. Timothy won several medals, including the Gold for the 4 x 100 meter relay. Both myself and Pat Wood helped coach the SOKY National 4 x 100 meter relay team.
In 2010, 2012, 2013 and 2014, the Louisville Flyers Division 1A Flag Football team practiced hard and won the State Championships. In late 2013, this team was invited to represent Special Olympics Kentucky in the 2014 USA Games in Princeton, New Jersey. In June 2014 the Louisville Flyers did represent Special Olympics Kentucky as Team Kentucky and compiled a record of 4 wins and 2 losses and a National Rank of 5th in Flag Football.
The Louisville Flyers continue to strive for excellence both on and off the field!
